NDC stands by choice to keep Baba Jamal

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has stood by its decision to maintain Baba Jamal as its parliamentary candidate for the Ayawaso East by-election, dismissing calls to cancel the primary over claims of vote-buying.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Wednesday, February 11, the party’s Deputy National Organiser, Elikem Kotoko, said the NDC followed due process in addressing concerns raised after the primary.

He noted that the President’s intervention demonstrated the party’s commitment to fairness and accountability, explaining that Baba Jamal had been recalled and that government appointees contesting internal elections would face similar sanctions where necessary.

“We commend the President’s response. It shows the party is determined to uphold strong standards. He has made it clear that any government appointee who contests will be treated the same way to ensure fairness,” Kotoko stated.

According to him, the leadership weighed the broader consequences of the matter before settling on its decision, stressing that the party remains committed to internal discipline.

The dispute arose following reports during the Ayawaso East primary that some aspirants allegedly distributed items to delegates — claims that triggered concerns about inducement and adherence to party rules.

Despite criticism from some quarters demanding tougher action, the NDC leadership says its priority is to consolidate party unity and prepare for the upcoming by-election.

Meanwhile, IMANI Africa President Franklin Cudjoe has criticised the party’s handling of the issue. He questioned why the results were not annulled in light of the allegations and warned that the NDC risks undermining its credibility, particularly given its previously strong stance against vote-buying.
