Akufo-Addo meets NPP MPs over possible leadership change

President Akufo-Addo convened a meeting with Members of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the Jubilee House on February 21. The purpose of the meeting was to address the escalating tension within the caucus regarding the proposed reshuffle of their front bench in Parliament.

Reports indicate that there is a division within the caucus, with one faction advocating for a change in leadership while another faction insists on maintaining the current leadership structure.

Those in favor of a change argue that Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu may not return to Parliament after 2025, and thus, his deputy, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, should assume leadership to facilitate a smoother transition in the next government.

However, on February 20, some NPP MPs led by 1st Deputy Speaker Joseph Osei-Owusu warned that they would not accept any changes in leadership. They expressed satisfaction with the current leadership under Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.
