Afenyo-Markin to replace Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu as Majority Leader

There are significant political developments within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ghana, with notable changes expected in leadership positions and campaign strategy for the upcoming 2024 general election.

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the current Majority Leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, is reportedly set to be replaced by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the current Deputy Majority Leader. While it remains uncertain if Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu will retain his role in government, there are indications that he could assume the position of Chairman of the NPP’s 2024 Manifesto Committee.

Frank Annoh Dompreh, the present Majority Chief Whip, is slated to ascend to the role of Deputy Majority Leader, creating an opportunity for Habib Iddrisu, the current First Deputy Chief Whip, to become the Majority Chief Whip. Patricia Appiagyei is likely to be appointed as the First Deputy Majority Chief Whip, following Lydia Seyram Alhassan’s nomination as Minister for Water Resources and Sanitation.

Additionally, the position of Second Deputy Chief Whip is expected to be filled by Alex Tetteh Djornobuah, the Member of Parliament for Sefwi-Akontombra.

A crucial meeting of the NPP’s National Council is scheduled to take place to finalize these changes, prompted by President Nana Akuffo-Addo’s recent Ministerial Reshuffle.

Meanwhile, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the NPP, is anticipated to unveil his campaign team to the National Executive Committee and National Council of the party. Among the potential appointments, former Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Dan Botwe, is likely to be named as the campaign manager for the 2024 general election. Botwe was among the ministers relieved of their posts in President Akufo-Addo’s reshuffle.
