Mexico handed Ghana their first defeat under coach Chris Hughton, securing a 2-0 victory in an international friendly match at the Bank of America Stadium. This loss marked Hughton’s first since taking charge of the Black Stars earlier this year.
Hughton had maintained an impressive unbeaten record with three wins in five games leading up to this match. However, facing Mexico, a formidable side, proved to be a tough challenge. Mexico extended their winning streak against Ghana to four games, with Hirving Lozano and Uriel Antuna scoring crucial goals in the second half to seal a 2-0 win.
Ghana started the game with a three-back formation, including Stephan Ambrosius, Nicholas Opoku, and Joseph Aidoo. Thomas Partey and Elisha Owusu partnered in midfield. Antoine Semenyo led the frontline, flanked by Mohammed Kudus and Joseph Paintsil on the wings, while Kingsley Schindler and Gideon Mensah operated as wingbacks.
Although the Black Stars had a promising start, they struggled to find the necessary firepower upfront to punish their opponents. In the 57th minute, Mexico took the lead with a brilliant effort from Lozano.
Hughton made changes by introducing Ernest Nuamah, Jordan Ayew, and Inaki Williams for Kingsley Schindler, Joseph Paintsil, and Antoine Semenyo. In the 72nd minute, Mexico extended their lead through Antuna Romero, securing their fourth successive win over Ghana.
Next, the Black Stars will face the United States of America at GEODIS Park in Nashville, Tennessee, on Tuesday, October 17, 2023.
