The lawyer for Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Edudzi Tamakloe, has stated that his client is prepared to prove his innocence in the case related to the purchase of 200 ambulances for the Ministry of Health.
Tamakloe has denied reports suggesting that Dr. Forson had written to the Attorney-General seeking to refund the amount involved and settle the matter through a plea bargain.
Tamakloe emphasized that Dr. Forson has no intention of settling the matter through a plea bargain and is fully prepared to defend himself against the charges.
He also challenged the Attorney-General to release any formal communication or application from Dr. Forson requesting a plea bargain.
Dr. Forson, who was Deputy Minister of Finance at the time the contract for the ambulances was awarded, has been accused of causing a €2.37 million financial loss to the state.
Prosecutors argue that the ambulances, described as ordinary buses without the necessary equipment, were not suitable for their intended purpose.
Three months ago, the Office of the Attorney-General rejected a proposal by counsel for Richard Jakpa, who is standing trial alongside Dr. Forson, to withdraw the case in exchange for a refund of the cash sum. The Attorney-General’s rejection was based on the argument that the proposed refund did not compensate for the state’s losses resulting from the purchase of the defective ambulances.
