Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, a prominent flagbearer hopeful of Ghana’s ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has issued a stern warning to the party’s elections committee ahead of the upcoming Presidential primary scheduled for November 4. Agyapong emphasized the need for the primary to be conducted with fairness and transparency.
Speaking at his Kumasi Showdown walk on Saturday, September 30, 2023, Agyapong made it clear that he would not hesitate to take action if he perceives any form of rigging or unfair practices during the elections.
In his address, he stated, “I’m not like Alan who is gentle, let them try…” Agyapong’s reference was to Alan Kyerematen, a former Trade and Industry Minister who recently resigned from the NPP, citing intimidation and unfair treatment within the party’s flagbearership race. Kyerematen has subsequently formed the “Movement For Change” to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 Presidential elections.
Agyapong asserted that he would adopt an “eye for an eye” approach during the election, indicating that he would not allow anyone to intimidate or manipulate him.
Furthermore, Agyapong claimed that he had received substantial offers of money to step down from the race and facilitate an easy path for Vice President Bawumia. He disclosed that he had turned down all such offers, including a proposal to become Bawumia’s running mate.
Agyapong remained resolute in his pursuit of the NPP’s Presidential candidacy, expressing his determination to win the election on November 4. His warning to the NPP’s elections committee underscores the heightened tensions and competitiveness within the party as it prepares for its internal primaries.
