Police Superintendent Accuses Bugri Naabu of Inventing Stories in IGP Ouster Plot

Location: Accra, Ghana

Police Superintendent George Asare, one of the senior police officers implicated in the alleged plot to remove Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has accused former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bugri Naabu, of inventing stories against him.

Appearing before the parliamentary committee investigating the leaked tape on Monday, September 4, Supt. Asare stated that some of the comments attributed to him were inventions of Bugri Naabu and not directly from him.

He claimed that he visited Mr. Naabu’s office on the latter’s invitation after being informed that the government was seeking recommendations for a new IGP. During the meeting, Supt. Asare said he made three recommendations, including COP Alex Mensah, Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, and Christian Tetteh Yuhuno.

Supt. Asare confirmed that the meeting took place on June 19, 2023, at Mr. Bugri Naabu’s office in Osu, Accra.

Supt. Asare is the third witness to appear before the committee, following Bugri Naabu, Supt. Emmanuel Gyebi, and key witness Commissioner George Mensah.

There have been discussions regarding whether the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, should be invited to testify before the committee.

While some members of the committee have suggested inviting the IGP to assist in the investigation, others, like former Deputy Defence Minister Major Derrick Oduro (Rtd.), believe that it may not be necessary.

The committee’s investigation into the leaked audio recording and allegations of a plot to remove the IGP continues to unfold, with further testimony expected in the coming days. The outcome of the investigation will likely have implications for the individuals involved and the Ghana Police Service.
