Former President John Dramani Mahama, the 2024 Presidential Candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has attributed President Akufo-Addo’s reluctance to approve the anti-LGBTQI+ bill to Ghana’s heavy reliance on foreign aid.

During his “Building Ghana Tour” in Accra, Mr. Mahama addressed religious leaders on Tuesday, March 12, outlining strategies to establish an economically self-sufficient Ghana and reduce dependence on foreign donors.

Mr. Mahama suggested that President Akufo-Addo’s hesitation to sign the bill into law is due to legal challenges, as someone has filed a suit with the Supreme Court. He emphasized the importance of self-reliance, stating that if Ghana were self-sufficient, it would not be susceptible to external influence. He argued that being self-reliant would prevent other countries from dictating Ghana’s policies.

President Akufo-Addo had previously expressed his intention to await the Supreme Court’s decision on the bill before making a final decision. Additionally, the Finance Ministry had advised against endorsing the bill, citing potential repercussions on international financial assistance.

The anti-LGBTQ+ bill aims to penalize LGBTQ+ individuals and their supporters and has generated significant controversy in Ghana.
