NPP’s 2024 Presidential Candidate Faces Tough Challenge, Says Governance Expert

Professor Baffour Agyeman-Duah, a governance expert and former United Nations Advisor on Governance, has voiced his belief that the NPP's 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, faces a formidable challenge in his bid to secure victory for the party in the upcoming December 7, 2024 elections.

Professor Baffour Agyeman-Duah, a governance expert and former United Nations Advisor on Governance, has voiced his belief that the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, faces a formidable challenge in his bid to secure victory for the party in the upcoming December 7, 2024 elections.

Expressing his views on the matter, Prof. Agyeman-Duah emphasized the difficulty Dr. Bawumia would encounter in distancing himself from the current economic situation in the country, which has faced criticism.

These remarks come in the wake of President Akufo-Addo’s recent State of the Nation Address, wherein he indicated that government officials only offer advice to the president, highlighting the executive power held by the presidency.

Despite this revelation seemingly absolving Dr. Bawumia, who was reportedly against the introduction of the e-levy, Prof. Agyeman-Duah offered a dissenting perspective, describing the situation as intriguing.

He underscored the challenge faced by Dr. Bawumia in navigating the complexities of his association with certain government policies that have failed to resonate with the public while concurrently seeking the presidency.

Prof. Agyeman-Duah asserted that Dr. Bawumia must devise innovative strategies to distance himself from these policies while maintaining a delicate balance due to his close ties with the incumbent president.

The governance expert emphasized the intricacies of the situation, highlighting the difficulty of publicly denouncing policies in which Dr. Bawumia had a significant role while simultaneously acknowledging their shortcomings.

Moreover, Prof. Agyeman-Duah underscored the challenge posed by the public’s awareness of the close relationship between the president and the vice president, complicating efforts to navigate these political dynamics.

In outlining his vision for Ghana, Dr. Bawumia has proposed certain tax reforms, including the abolition of the controversial e-levy, the 10% betting tax, and the emission tax, along with the introduction of a three percent flat rate at the ports, if elected president.

As the political landscape evolves in the lead-up to the 2024 elections, Dr. Bawumia faces the formidable task of addressing public concerns while carving out a distinct path forward for the NPP.
