Bank of Ghana’s Head Office Declared a “Crime Scene” by NDC Chairman During Protest

Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has declared the head office of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) a “crime scene.” Nketia made this declaration during the #OccupyBoGProtest, asserting that the ongoing financial mismanagement within the Central Bank, under the leadership of Governor Dr. Ernest Yedu Addison, justifies describing it as such.

Addressing protesters at the outset of the long-awaited demonstration on Tuesday, October 3, Nketia explained that in the realm of security, any location where a crime is committed is referred to as a “crime scene.” Consequently, given the allegations of financial mismanagement and the resulting hyper-inflation and poverty, he argued that it is fitting to label the BoG’s headquarters as a “crime scene.”

The primary objective of the #OccupyBoGProtest is to demand the resignation of Dr. Addison and his two deputies, Dr. Maxwell Opoku-Afari and Elsie Addo Awadzi. Protesters claim that these officials have mismanaged the country’s finances, leading to economic instability.

The police had initially re-routed the course of the demonstration, citing the Bank of Ghana’s offices as a security zone. However, Nketia disagreed with this designation, asserting that the police themselves are suffering from the same economic hardships as the protesters. He emphasized that the police should not be seen as obstructing the demonstration’s noble cause.

Nketia also cautioned that if any untoward incident occurs during the protesters’ attempt to deliver their petition to the Governor, the blame will fall on the police. He urged all participants to return home peacefully after presenting the petition to Dr. Addison. The demonstration underscores the growing tensions and grievances related to the country’s economic conditions and the management of its financial institutions.
