Farmers express doubts about relying solely on the ‘One Village, One Dam’ initiative for crop growth in light of the mid-year budget.

Farmers in Ghana have expressed skepticism regarding the effectiveness of the dams constructed under the ‘One Village, One Dam’ initiative introduced by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government. The dams were intended to support dry season farming in villages in northern Ghana, but according to Dr. Charles Nyaaba, the Executive Director of the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana, they are not serving their intended purpose and cannot be relied upon for agribusiness.

In addition to the issue with the dams, Dr. Nyaaba highlighted the high cost of production as a major concern for farmers in the country. He emphasized that there have been no significant policy interventions by the government to reduce the cost of production or provide adequate input support such as fertilizers.

With the mid-year budget presentation by Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta approaching, farmers are urging the government to implement measures to improve local production and address the increasing cost of food production. They hope the budget will include policies and interventions to tackle the economic challenges and support the agricultural sector.
