Muslims across the country will begin a 30-day religious fast on Thursday, March 23, after the moon was sighted in Bawku, Upper East Region.
The Bawku Chief Imam confirmed this.
At dawn on Thursday, March 23, Chief Imam Sheikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharubutu directed that all Muslims in Ghana observe the obligatory fast based on religious principles.
“The moon has been sighted in Bawku, according to the report we received from Bawku and the source coming from the Bawku Chief Imam,” Chief Imam’s Spokesperson Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu said on Wednesday.
Ramadan is the Islamic calendar’s ninth month.
Fasting is obligatory to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Prophet Mohammed.
On Saturday, April 22, it will be crowned with Eid al-Fitr.
