Head coach of the Black Stars, Otto Addo, has expressed confidence in his team’s ability to compete strongly against Austria in an international friendly scheduled in Vienna.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Speaking ahead of the match at the Ernst Happel Stadium, Addo acknowledged the challenge posed by the Austrian side, describing them as tactically organised and physically intense, particularly due to their high-pressing style of play.
He noted that Austria’s approach, influenced by a “Red Bull school” philosophy, demands constant movement and aggression, making them formidable opponents. Despite this, Addo remains optimistic, stressing that Ghana also boasts a strong squad capable of matching their opponents.
The coach highlighted the importance of the fixture, along with an upcoming game against Germany, as part of preparations for the FIFA World Cup. According to him, facing top European teams will help assess the team’s readiness after a long absence from competitive matches on the continent.
However, Ghana will head into the match without key attackers Iñaki Williams and Brandon Thomas-Asante, both sidelined through injury. Addo admitted their absence is a setback but also an opportunity for other players to prove themselves. He praised replacement Ransford Königsdörffer for stepping in effectively and contributing positively to the squad.
While recognising Austria’s experienced players, including David Alaba, Addo insisted Ghana has enough quality across all departments to compete and possibly secure a win.
He emphasised that the outcome will depend on how well the team executes its strategy, noting that Ghana must match Austria’s intensity and remain tactically disciplined throughout the game.
Addo further stressed the value of such high-level friendlies, especially with Ghana set to face strong European sides like Croatia and England in the World Cup group stage. He explained that these matches are crucial for fine-tuning the team and building confidence ahead of the tournament.
The Austria encounter is expected to serve as a key test for the Black Stars, offering insight into their preparedness before another major challenge against Germany.
