Frank Davies said the former minister would contest any legal process aimed at compelling his return to Ghana over corruption-related allegations connected to his time in office.

Reports suggest that Mr. Ofori-Atta is currently pursuing permanent residency in the United States, as he believes returning to Ghana may not guarantee him a fair trial.

Speaking during an interview on Channel One Newsroom on Sunday, March 15, 2026, Mr. Davies confirmed that steps have been taken by Ghanaian authorities to begin the extradition process. However, he stressed that his client intends to challenge the move through the appropriate legal channels.

“The government has initiated an extradition request, and the next stage will involve extradition proceedings. From all indications, the matter will be strongly contested, and when the time comes, we will deal with it accordingly,” he stated.

Mr. Davies also explained that the aim of the extradition request appears to be to secure the return of Mr. Ofori-Atta to Ghana so that he can respond to the allegations against him.

According to him, the government’s objective is to have the former finance minister brought back to the country from the United States.

Mr. Ofori-Atta has recently faced increased scrutiny over corruption-related accusations linked to decisions and activities during his tenure as Ghana’s finance minister. However, full details of the alleged offences and any formal charges have not yet been publicly outlined.

Should formal extradition proceedings begin in the United States, the case could attract significant legal attention, as such matters often involve extensive court hearings as well as diplomatic processes between the two countries.
