According to the Accra Regional Command, the court issued the restraining order on February 24 after determining that the timing of the demonstration posed risks to public order and safety. The intended protest date coincides with Ghana’s State of the Nation Address, an event that typically demands heightened national security arrangements.

In a statement released on February 26, the Greater Accra Regional Police Command dismissed claims circulating on social media that the organisers had not been officially notified of the legal action. The Command insisted that the court’s order had been properly served on the conveners.

Police authorities emphasised that the prohibition applies specifically to the February 27 date and warned that any attempt to proceed with the protest would constitute a breach of the law.

Despite the ban, the Command signalled its willingness to cooperate with organisers to reschedule the event. It explained that, consistent with the High Court’s ruling and provisions under the Public Order Act, discussions could be held to identify an alternative date that would not clash with major national activities.

The police further appealed to the public to respect the court’s decision and refrain from actions that could disrupt public peace.
