Unpaid Nurses and Midwives Demand Probe Over Disappearing Salary Arrears

The Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives Ghana has raised alarm over what it describes as the unexplained removal of validated salary arrears from the payment vouchers of its members.

In a statement released on Thursday, February 26, the group said several affected nurses and midwives had consistently seen their outstanding arrears reflected and validated on the government payroll system each month even though the actual payments were never made. According to the Coalition, the situation took a disturbing turn in February 2026 when the previously accumulated arrears allegedly vanished from members’ payment vouchers without any corresponding disbursement.

The group expressed shock over the development, particularly after the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department reportedly dismissed the claims when the issue became public. Describing the response as unacceptable, the Coalition maintained that payroll validators and human resource officers at various health facilities had independently confirmed that the arrears were removed from the system despite no payments being processed.

The group questioned the authority behind the action, asking who sanctioned the deletion of the arrears and under what legal or administrative grounds such a decision was taken.

Calling the development unjust, the Coalition said the incident reinforces long-standing frustrations over salary administration and transparency within the public sector. It stressed that nurses and midwives who continue to provide essential healthcare services deserve accountability and fair treatment.

The Coalition is demanding an immediate investigation into the matter and the full restoration and payment of all affected arrears. It warned that further steps may be taken if swift corrective action is not implemented.
