Kwaw Kese to Refund $170 Raised for Kwesi Arthur After GoFundMe Backlash

Ghanaian rapper Kwaw Kese has revealed that he will be returning $170 collected through a GoFundMe campaign he set up for fellow artiste Kwesi Arthur, following public criticism and misunderstanding over the fundraiser.

The campaign was launched after Kwesi Arthur shared on social media that his former management was allegedly demanding $150,000 over the use of his own images. Hoping to help, Kwaw Kese opened the GoFundMe account to assist in paying the sum, describing it as an effort to “give Kwesi Arthur his freedom” from the dispute with his former management company, Ground Up Chale.

However, Kwesi Arthur later clarified that he had no knowledge of the fundraiser and asked the public not to contribute, sparking controversy. Speaking to Kwame Dadzie and Doreen Avio on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz, Kwaw Kese admitted he was disappointed by the response, explaining that his intentions were purely supportive.

“I thought I could leverage our large fanbase to help him settle this issue. The GoFundMe was created solely for him, and I would never have taken the money for myself,” Kwaw Kese said. “It pained me that someone could claim rights over his images and demand such a huge sum. I just wanted to help him be free from that.”

Kwaw Kese confirmed that only $170 had been raised and said he had requested GoFundMe to refund the contributions. “Given the backlash, it’s best to return the money to those who contributed. The funds are still in the account, and they’ve given me a deadline to withdraw it or they will refund the donors,” he explained.

While well-intentioned, the fundraising effort has highlighted the challenges of public campaigns involving high-profile personalities, particularly when consent or prior knowledge is not obtained.
