Yaw Acheampong Boafo, the President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), has called on the government to step up its efforts to combat galamsey, or illegal mining, by going after the influential people who are supposedly funding the unlawful business.

On Monday, September 9, Boafo spoke to attendees of the 2024/2025 Annual General Conference in Kumasi. He emphasised the urgent need for swift action to stop galamsey, which has had a terrible impact on the environment and nearby communities.

It is impossible to overlook the anecdotal evidence that galamsey is dominated by a strong interest in Ghana. He said, “The state needs to be sincere and address the true forces driving this threat.

The GBA President appealed for national unity in addressing the issue of illegal mining rather than reducing it to partisan point-scoring, calling the remarks “irresponsible.”

Boafo criticised the politicisation of such a crucial matter and emphasised the necessity of working together to find a solution to the Galamsey situation.

“When a member of the parliament’s leadership said, on the floor of the chamber, that the minority party had contaminated Ghana’s waters more than the ruling party, it was extremely upsetting and very unfortunate.”

“A member of parliament making such a careless comment is indicative of the ills plaguing our beloved country. Every matter needs to be transformed to political point-scoring by the police force of a rival country.
