The Ghana Football Association has received an overwhelming number of applications for the vacant Black Stars head coach position, with more than 600 candidates expressing interest in the role.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!GFA President Kurt Okraku described the response as a strong indication of Ghana’s continued reputation in global football, despite the team’s recent struggles on the pitch.
The coaching position became available after Otto Addo was dismissed following a series of underwhelming performances, including losses in international friendlies against Austria and Germany. The decision to part ways with him was finalised after high-level discussions among football authorities.
According to the GFA, the selection process is already underway, with both Ghanaian and international applicants being assessed. Okraku noted that while the number of applications is impressive, the association’s priority is to identify a candidate with the right experience, technical expertise and vision to lead the national team forward.
He added that a new coach is expected to be named within the next one to two weeks, as the association works within tight timelines ahead of upcoming fixtures.
The urgency is driven by scheduled friendly matches against Mexico and Wales in May, which will serve as an early test for the incoming coach. These games are expected to provide an opportunity to evaluate players, introduce new tactical ideas and rebuild team chemistry.
Beyond the friendlies, attention is already shifting toward the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Ghana faces a challenging group featuring Panama, Croatia and England. The strength of the opposition has increased pressure on the GFA to make a well-informed and strategic appointment.
The association has assured fans and stakeholders that the recruitment process will be thorough and transparent, with the ultimate goal of restoring the Black Stars’ competitiveness on the international stage.
