Head coach of the Black Stars, Otto Addo, has described Ghana’s heavy loss to Austria as a significant setback, urging his players to show resilience and improved defensive organisation ahead of their next friendly against Germany.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Speaking before the upcoming encounter, Addo admitted the defeat had prompted serious reflection within the team, particularly regarding defensive lapses that led to avoidable goals. He noted that while the final scoreline appeared emphatic, the early stages of the match were more evenly contested, with Ghana creating chances that could have changed the outcome.
However, the coach expressed concern about the team’s reaction after conceding, pointing to poor body language and a lack of belief in mounting a comeback. According to him, the inability to respond positively after going two goals down highlighted issues with mentality and on-field leadership.
Addo emphasised that tightening defensive transitions will be crucial against Germany, warning that their opponents are highly effective when exploiting spaces during quick attacking moves. He stressed the need for the team to reorganise quickly and remain disciplined throughout the game.
Addressing criticism over player selection, the Ghana coach dismissed claims of bias, insisting that all call-ups are based strictly on merit and performance. He referenced players like Ransford Königsdörffer as examples of individuals who earned their place through consistent displays at club level.
On the team’s attacking struggles, particularly the failure to register a shot on target in the Austria match Addo pointed to limited preparation time as a major challenge. With players arriving from different clubs shortly before the game, he explained that building cohesion had been difficult.
Despite these concerns, he remains optimistic that the squad’s attacking players will rediscover their form, noting their proven goal-scoring ability at club level.
Addo also acknowledged the ongoing challenge of getting the best out of key forward Antoine Semenyo, revealing that it is an issue he continues to analyse deeply, even beyond training sessions.
Looking ahead, the coach declined to reveal his starting line-up, highlighting his preference for tactical flexibility depending on the opponent. He maintained that adapting strategies is essential rather than sticking to a rigid system.
Amid mounting scrutiny, Addo brushed aside concerns about his position, stating that his primary focus remains on preparing the team to improve performances and deliver better results.
The clash with Germany now offers the Black Stars a crucial opportunity to bounce back, restore confidence, and address the weaknesses exposed in their previous outing.
