Akufo-Addo to Lead African Union Election Observer Mission in Congo

Former President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has been appointed by the African Union to head its Election Observation Mission for the upcoming presidential election in the Republic of the Congo.

The confirmation was announced in a statement issued by the former president’s office on Tuesday, March 10. According to the statement, Akufo-Addo will lead a delegation of international observers tasked with monitoring the country’s presidential polls scheduled for Sunday, March 15, 2026.

The observer mission, organised under the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM), will include representatives from several continental institutions. These include members of the AU Permanent Representatives Committee, delegates from the Pan-African Parliament, and representatives from the African Governance Platform.

The delegation will also feature election management officials, independent electoral experts, civil society representatives, and advocates representing women and youth groups across Africa. Akufo-Addo is expected to depart Accra on Friday, March 13, and return on March 18 after completing the observation assignment.

According to the statement, the deployment of the observer team forms part of the African Union’s efforts to promote democratic governance on the continent. The mission is expected to provide an independent assessment of the credibility, transparency, and fairness of the electoral process in the Republic of the Congo.
