Tema Oil Refinery moves to expand output from 28,000 to 45,000 barrels per day

The Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) is working to increase its refining capacity as part of efforts to revitalise operations and boost productivity at the facility. The refinery is currently undertaking technical upgrades aimed at raising its processing capacity from 28,000 barrels per stream day to about 45,000 barrels per stream day.

According to officials, the increase will be achieved through the addition of a new processing unit, known as the F61 unit. This unit will operate alongside the refinery’s existing F1 unit, with both connected to the crude distillation system to enhance operational efficiency and improve output levels. Management explained that the refinery has continued operations since production resumed, while engineers carry out the technical procedures required to integrate the new unit into the processing system.

Once the integration process is completed, TOR expects its production capacity to increase significantly from the current 28,000 barrels per stream day to 45,000 barrels per stream day. The refinery is currently operating under a tolling arrangement, where private companies supply crude oil to the facility for refining. Under this system, TOR processes the crude oil for a fee and returns the refined petroleum products to the companies that supplied the crude.

Corporate Affairs Officer of TOR, Godwin Mahama Ayaba, disclosed the development during an interview on Citi FM on Monday, March 9. He explained that because of the tolling arrangement, the refinery is not responsible for marketing or distributing the finished petroleum products, as those decisions are handled by the crude oil suppliers.

Mr Ayaba noted that although the refinery’s current nameplate capacity is 28,000 barrels per stream day, the introduction of the F61 unit is expected to push output to 45,000 barrels per stream day. He added that management is also exploring plans to further expand the refinery’s capacity to around 60,000 barrels per stream day in the medium term.
