The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reclaimed the Ayawaso East parliamentary seat following a commanding victory by its candidate, Baba Jamal, in the by-election held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The poll was organised to fill the vacancy created by the passing of the area’s Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure, in January.
Official results show Baba Jamal secured 10,884 votes out of 16,928 valid ballots cast. His closest challenger, New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate Yusif Ali Baba, garnered 4,009 votes. Independent candidate Mohammed Umar Sanda obtained 1,885 votes, while Ibrahim Idrissu and Kanor David polled 43 and 104 votes respectively. The election recorded 120 rejected ballots, bringing the total number of ballots cast to 17,048.
The outcome closely mirrored projections by research firm Global InfoAnalytics, whose pre-election survey conducted between February 28 and March 1 indicated that Baba Jamal was on course to secure a commanding lead, with his main rival trailing significantly.
Despite the decisive result, voter turnout across many polling stations was notably low. The exercise, however, was generally peaceful, with electoral officers and security personnel ensuring a smooth process throughout the day. The win consolidates the NDC’s grip on the constituency and signals Baba Jamal’s return to Parliament. He previously served as Member of Parliament for Akwatia and later represented Ghana as High Commissioner to Nigeria.
He is expected to be sworn in within days to assume his legislative duties and continue the work left unfinished by the late Mahama Naser Toure.
