John Dramani Mahama has nominated Baba Sadiq Abdulai Abu to serve as Ghana’s High Commissioner-designate to Nigeria, signaling a fresh chapter in the country’s diplomatic representation in Abuja.

He is set to replace Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, who was recently recalled from his post. Baba Jamal’s recall followed his decision to contest the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election after the passing of the area’s Member of Parliament, Nasser Mahama Toure.
The diplomatic position had been under public attention since early February 2026 when President Mahama directed Jamal’s recall amid allegations of voter inducement during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries in Ayawaso East — a race Jamal entered to succeed the late MP and ultimately won. By appointing Baba Sadiq Abdulai Abu, President Mahama appears to be repositioning Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Nigeria while elevating a prominent member of the governing party to an international assignment.
Baba Sadiq is widely recognized for his contributions to Ghana’s creative arts and media space. He was also the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for Okaikwei Central in the 2024 general elections, marking his active involvement in frontline politics before this diplomatic nomination.
His move from partisan politics into diplomacy represents a significant transition in his career. As High Commissioner-designate, he will be tasked with advancing Ghana’s interests in Nigeria and fostering stronger political, economic and cultural cooperation between the two West African nations.
Ghana and Nigeria maintain longstanding ties rooted in shared history and regional collaboration. However, relations have occasionally faced strain over trade policies, migration issues and regulatory challenges affecting businesses operating across both countries. Baba Sadiq’s tenure is therefore expected to focus on sustaining dialogue and reinforcing bilateral collaboration at a crucial time for both nations.Ghana and Nigeria maintain longstanding ties rooted in shared history and regional collaboration.
