Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, announced the proposed upgrade in Accra during the launch of the 2026 Meteorological Awareness Month and the unveiling of the 2026 Seasonal Forecast for Southern Ghana.

He explained that the move forms part of a broader legislative reform designed to give the institution expanded legal backing and stronger policy influence. According to the Minister, the change will better position the agency to respond to the growing challenges posed by climate variability, including intensified flooding, erratic rainfall patterns, and other extreme weather events. “We cannot stop weather hazards from occurring, but we can minimize their effects through timely alerts, preparedness, and coordinated action,” he stated. “Upgrading the agency to an authority will enhance its mandate and empower it to play a more decisive role in national policy and disaster risk reduction.”

The event drew participation from government officials, climate scientists, disaster management agencies, aviation industry representatives, as well as stakeholders from the agriculture and maritime sectors — all of whom depend on accurate and timely weather information.

Seasonal outlooks, aviation weather advisories, and early warning systems issued by the agency remain critical for safeguarding lives, supporting food production, ensuring safe air and sea travel, and guiding urban development planning across the country.
