Ayawaso East Gears Up for March 3 By-Election After Death of MP Mahama Naser Toure

Everything is in place for the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election scheduled for March 3, 2026, following the passing of the area’s Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure. The seat became vacant after the legislator died in January while undergoing treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

Balloting to determine positions on the ballot paper was conducted on Thursday, February 12, 2026. The candidate of the National Democratic Congress, Baba Jamal, secured the first slot. Ibrahim Iddrisu, representing the Liberal People’s Party, picked the second position.

Yussif Baba Ali of the New Patriotic Party will appear third on the ballot. Independent candidates Alhaji Mohammed Umaru Sanda and David Kannor obtained the fourth and fifth positions respectively.

The director of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, Sam Dottoh Kwaah, indicated that the Commission is fully prepared to conduct the exercise.

According to him, all categories of electoral officials have been recruited, with their training running from Tuesday through Friday, February 27, 2026. Two Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs) have been allocated to each of the 113 polling stations within the constituency.

He added that Notices of Poll have already been printed and distributed, while the printing of ballot papers as well as Statement of Poll and Declaration of Results forms commenced on February 24, 2026. Ballot papers are expected to reach the constituency by Saturday, February 28.

The Commission projects that 49,966 registered voters will cast their ballots in the by-election.

Electoral History

Ayawaso East has been a stronghold of the NDC in recent elections. In the 2024 parliamentary contest, the late Alhaji Toure won decisively with 22,139 votes, representing 70.85%, defeating the NPP’s Zak Rahman, who secured 9,110 votes (29.15%). In the 2020 elections, Alhaji Mahama polled 23,583 votes (61.18%), while the NPP candidate, Peter Kwame Antwi Mireku, garnered 14,966 votes (38.82%).

Similarly, in 2016, Alhaji Mahama retained the seat with 23,407 votes (62.10%). Peter Kwame Antwi Mireku of the NPP obtained 13,599 votes (36.08%). Other candidates in that election included Mohammed Ibrahim Bilal of the Progressive People’s Party, Abdul Ganiyu Shaibu of the Convention People’s Party, and Alhassan Abubakari of the People’s National Convention, who secured marginal votes.
