The Ghana Police Service, through the Dansoman District Command, has apprehended a 33-year-old woman, Latifa Salifu, for allegedly stealing a four-day-old baby from the postnatal ward of Mamprobi Hospital in Accra. At a media briefing on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Accra Regional Head of Public Affairs, said the arrest was made following prompt investigations and assistance from members of the public after the case was reported a day earlier.
Police said that at about 10 a.m. on Tuesday, February 17, Abigail Dzikunu and Henrita Abe Blessed lodged a complaint that an unknown woman, posing as a nurse, had taken a newborn from the hospital’s postnatal ward. The child’s mother, Precious Ankomah, who gave birth on February 14, reportedly told officers that a woman wearing a peach-colored nurse’s uniform collected the baby under the guise of administering medication and failed to return.
Officers quickly proceeded to the hospital, gathered statements, and began a search for the suspect. At approximately 3:40 a.m. on Wednesday, February 18, Salifu was arrested at the premises of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. She was found in possession of a baby believed to be the missing child.
During questioning, the suspect claimed she had given birth at the hospital but was discharged due to inadequate care. However, checks conducted by investigators found no evidence to substantiate her account. She remains in police custody as investigations continue. Meanwhile, steps are being taken to ensure the baby receives proper medical care and protection while authorities complete their inquiries.
