Takaichi clinches historic supermajority in Japan’s election landslide

Takaichi, who became Japan’s first female prime minister last October, has enjoyed soaring approval ratings thanks to her strong work ethic, charisma, and social media savvy. Viral moments, such as a drum session with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, boosted her popularity, while a high-profile endorsement from former US President Donald Trump added international attention.

The snap election was a calculated gamble to consolidate her party’s mandate after years of declining support and political funding scandals. Her victory gives the LDP and coalition partners control of all lower house committees and a fresh mandate to tackle pressing issues, including Japan’s aging population, rising living costs, a weak yen, and strained ties with China.

Takaichi’s leadership has drawn global attention for her decisive, sometimes unorthodox style, though she has faced criticism over her intense work schedule and comments on Taiwan, which strained relations with Beijing.

Markets responded positively to the election outcome, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 index surging more than 5% amid expectations of tax cuts and increased government spending.

In her victory speech, Takaichi thanked voters braving harsh weather and reaffirmed her commitment to proactive economic and fiscal policies. Trump celebrated her win on social media, calling it a “LANDSLIDE Victory” and praising her bold leadership.

With this historic mandate, Takaichi is positioned to reshape Japan’s political landscape and assert her influence both domestically and on the global stage.
