Court remands 3 suspects over attack on fire officers

Three individuals, identified as Solomon Anaba (18 years old), Akongoli Adoko (18 years old), and Lamamia Ishmael (21 years old), all laborers, have been remanded by the Kwadaso Circuit Court. They were arrested for allegedly attacking fire officers during a fire incident at the Racecourse Market in Kumasi.

The accused persons are facing charges of conspiracy to commit assault on a public officer and assault on a public officer. However, their pleas were not taken during the court proceedings.

The prosecutor, ASP Jonas Newlove Adjei, requested the court to keep the accused in police custody to allow for further investigations. He argued that since the accused persons are squatters, granting them bail could lead to interference with the ongoing investigations.

Presided over by His Honour Stephen Kumi, the court granted the prosecutor’s request and remanded the accused persons. They are scheduled to reappear in court on March 26, 2024.

The accused individuals were apprehended on March 11, 2024, after allegedly throwing stones at fire fighters from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital fire station who were deployed to control a raging inferno. One of the fire fighters sustained injuries from being hit by a stone but has since been treated and discharged.

The attack on the fire fighters resulted in a delay in responding to the fire, leading to the destruction of over one hundred metal container shops. It took the fire fighters nearly six hours to bring the fire under control.
