The Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Samuel Dubik Mahama, has provided insight into why Accra Academy and other senior high schools were disconnected from the national electricity grid. According to him, this action was part of a nationwide effort to recover debts owed to the company.

Mr. Mahama explained that the accumulated debt owed by customers, including schools, has become significantly large, with senior high schools owing millions of Ghanaian cedis. He mentioned that the debt stock nationwide amounts to approximately GHC 2.5 billion.

Addressing the specific case of Accra Academy, which owed over GHC 400,000, Mr. Mahama expressed regret for the inconvenience caused by the disconnection.

He assured that discussions would be held with the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service to find a lasting solution to the issue and prevent similar occurrences in the future.

It’s important to note that the disconnection of Accra Academy and other schools was part of an ongoing initiative by ECG to recover outstanding payments owed to the company.

Paul Agraga, head of prosecution at ECG, clarified that the disconnections were not targeted at specific schools but were part of routine efforts to collect debts owed by customers.

The ECG emphasized the importance of recovering these outstanding payments to settle debts owed to power producers and ensure the sustainability of electricity supply in Ghana.
