Eric Opoku, the Member of Parliament for Asunafo South, has accused the government of diverting GH¢750 million in 2023 from the District Assemblies Common Fund to purchase laptops for distribution to senior high school students. He claimed that this diversion will hinder development at the district level.
According to Opoku, the government plans to divert an additional GH¢750 million for the same purpose in the current year. He expressed concern that this diversion of funds would prevent local assemblies from undertaking essential development projects.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, had earlier announced the government’s plan to distribute over 1.4 million tablets to students at Wesley Girls Senior High School under the free SHS policy. This initiative aims to enhance teaching and learning in schools.
Opoku’s accusations suggest a disagreement over the government’s allocation of funds, with concerns raised about the impact on local development versus educational investments.
