The news of Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu, using a presidential jet to attend polo games in Kano State has stirred a mixed response on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
The discussion began when journalist Jaafar Jaafar criticized Seyi’s use of a presidential jet for non-official purposes, drawing a comparison to a similar instance when President Muhammadu Buhari’s daughter, Hanan, traveled in a presidential jet for a photo tour.
Sharing photos on X, Jaafar wrote, “Here’s Tinubu’s golden child, Seyi, traveling in a presidential jet to watch polo in Kano. But this trend did not start today. Buhari set a bad example when he allowed his daughter, Hanan, to travel in a presidential jet for a photo tour in Bauchi. Even if our laws are vague on this, one thing is clear. This is an offense to the moral code of leadership.”
Reactions on X were varied, with some users expressing their concerns about the ethical and moral aspects of this practice, while others defended Seyi Tinubu, arguing that he was wealthy before his father’s presidency and had a right to use the presidential jet. There were also mentions of the use of special forces unit as bodyguards and criticisms about a “culture of impunity” within the political elite.
The debate highlights the broader issue of ethical and moral standards expected of political leaders and their families, especially when using state resources for personal purposes.
It remains to be seen how this public discourse may influence the behavior of political leaders and their families in Nigeria.
