The convenors of the #FixTheCountry and #OccupyJulorbiHouse protests have announced plans to picket near the seat of government, Jubilee House, from Friday, December 1, to Sunday, December 31.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The picket, themed ‘#OccupyJulorbiHouse’ and ‘#JustResign,’ will call on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to resign immediately or face impeachment by Parliament, according to a statement issued by Democracy Hub on Monday, October 9.
The group cited concerns about President Akufo-Addo’s stewardship of Ghana, alleging incompetence, a lack of integrity, routine abuse of power, and greed.
They also expressed worries about unemployment among the youth, economic mismanagement, deteriorating press freedom, extra-judicial killings, and the persecution of activists advocating for democratic reforms.
Democracy Hub’s statement further indicated that the protesters would demand the urgent prosecution of corrupt officials, including family members of the president who are part of the government.
Additionally, the group advocates for progressive constitutional reforms that address issues of social equity, economic justice, and confront the abuse of power and impunity.
The month-long protest will take place near Jubilee House, specifically on the publicly accessible side facing Liberation Street.
The organizers plan to establish and publish extensive picketing guidelines before the protests to ensure a peaceful event. They will also conduct informational sessions to educate the public about these guidelines.
This announcement follows a previous attempt by the group to embark on a three-day demonstration in September, which led to the arrest of participants.
Despite police warnings and attempts to prevent the demonstration, the protesters persisted in their call for reforms and government accountability.
As the December picket approaches, it is likely to draw significant attention and raise questions about the government’s response to the protesters’ demands.
The organizers hope to leverage this protest to push for their agenda of change and reform in Ghana.
