Mrs. Kufuor, who served as the First Lady of Ghana from January 7, 2001, to January 6, 2009, passed away on Sunday, October 1, after a long illness.
In a tribute issued on Monday, October 2, President Akufo-Addo expressed his profound sadness at the news of her passing. He emphasized the inevitable nature of human mortality and conveyed his admiration for Mrs. Kufuor’s family, especially her brother, the late JH Mensah, and nephew Ambassador DK Osei.
President Akufo-Addo also highlighted Mrs. Kufuor’s invaluable contributions, describing her as a constant source of advice, encouragement, and prayers for former President Kufuor during his tenure as leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and as President of Ghana. He noted her linguistic abilities, fluency in several languages, including Ewe, and her dignity in the role of First Lady.
The President praised Mrs. Kufuor’s warmth, kindness, and grace, citing her resilience in facing life’s challenges with stoicism and an unwavering faith in the sovereignty of Almighty God.
On behalf of himself, his wife, Rebecca, and the people of Ghana, President Akufo-Addo expressed his wish for Mrs. Kufuor to find a peaceful place of rest in the embrace of the Almighty. He extended his condolences to the Kufuor family and all those mourning the loss of this remarkable and dignified First Lady.
Theresa Kufuor’s legacy as a compassionate and influential figure in Ghanaian politics and society will be remembered, and her contributions to the nation will be celebrated for generations to come. She was 88 years old at the time of her passing.
