Customers of the now-defunct Menzgold Company Limited have reached out to former President John Dramani Mahama for assistance in recovering their funds that are locked in the illicit gold dealership and investment company. Since Menzgold was shut down in 2018, customers have faced significant hardships, with some suffering from blindness, mental illness, and even loss of life.
Fred Forson, the leader and spokesperson for the group of Menzgold customers, made an emotional plea to former President Mahama during a meeting at his Cantonments office. Forson highlighted the dire situation they find themselves in and the urgent need for a state bailout to alleviate their suffering.
“We believe that when Your Excellency adds your voice, it will help. Where we are now, we need a bailout from the state, so we humbly call on you to lead us in calling on the state to give us a bailout plan. Because life is very, very unbearable for us,” Forson expressed.
He also pointed out the slow progress in addressing the matter, highlighting that it has been over four years since the company’s closure, and the civil aspect of retrieving their money remains pending.
Former President Mahama offered his condolences to the victims and acknowledged that such fraudulent schemes often thrive due to weak regulatory oversight by the government. He expressed concern over the government’s delay in taking control of Menzgold’s accounts, confiscating its assets, and using the proceeds from asset auctions to repay a portion of customer investments.
In response to the plea from Menzgold customers, President Mahama pledged to join their cause and bring attention to their plight. He urged the government to provide transparency and updates on its efforts to address the situation.
The Menzgold customers hope that with the support of the former President, they will be able to recover their funds and begin to rebuild their lives after the financial losses they have endured.
