John Dramani Mahama, the former President of Ghana and the 2024 flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called on the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) to enhance transparency in the limited voter registration exercise set to begin on Tuesday.
In a Facebook Live session with his followers on Wednesday, September 6, Mahama urged the EC to heed calls to extend the exercise to electoral areas.
Mahama encouraged eligible Ghanaians to visit registration centers starting from Tuesday, September 12, to register for the upcoming December 7, 2024 elections.
However, he expressed concern that the EC had not taken into account calls to hold the exercise in electoral offices.
“I wish to add my voice to those who have called on the EC to reconsider its decision to restrict the registration exercise to its district offices only,” Mahama stated, emphasizing that this restriction contradicts the EC’s own regulations.
He further recommended that the EC expand the exercise in line with regulation 22(b) of CI 91, as amended by CI 126, to include electoral areas instead of limiting it to the district offices. Mahama argued that this expansion would reduce inconveniences related to transportation and financial constraints for potential registrants living in distant locations.
The limited voter registration exercise is scheduled to conclude on Monday, October 2, and will take place between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm each day.
The EC announced this exercise ahead of the district level and unit committee elections, which are slated for Tuesday, December 19.
