Parliamentary Committee Continues Probe into Leaked Audio on IGP Removal Plot

Date: September 4, 2023

Location: [Parliament]

The Parliamentary Committee tasked with investigating a leaked audio recording concerning an alleged plot to remove the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, is set to continue its proceedings today, September 4, 2023.

The committee, led by Samuel Atta Akyea, has been diligently examining the circumstances surrounding the controversial audio recording.

The primary witness in the case, Chief Bugri Naabu, former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has already undergone intense questioning by the committee.

Additionally, two police officers, Superintendent Emmanuel Gyebi and Commissioner George Mensah, a key witness, have also been subjected to rigorous examination.

The next police officer scheduled to appear before the committee is Superintendent George Asare, who is expected to provide further insights into the case.

One of the noteworthy developments in the proceedings was Commissioner George Mensah’s assertion that the IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, orchestrated the recording of the leaked tape and possesses the original copy.

Commissioner Mensah maintained that the committee could contact the IGP if they required access to the tape.

This assertion has generated diverse opinions regarding the potential involvement of the IGP in the recording and the necessity of inviting him to assist with the investigation. James Agalga, a member of the committee, suggested that the IGP might be invited to aid in the probe.

However, former Deputy Defence Minister, Major Derrick Oduro (Rtd.), held a different view, asserting that the IGP’s invitation might not be warranted given the nature of the allegations and the committee’s terms of reference.

The ongoing proceedings have attracted significant public attention and underscore the importance of transparency and accountability in governance and law enforcement.

The outcome of the investigation is eagerly awaited, as it may have far-reaching implications for the leadership and integrity of the Ghana Police Service.

The parliamentary committee’s mandate is to determine the authenticity of the leaked audio recording and uncover any underlying motives or individuals involved in the alleged plot to remove the IGP from office.

The proceedings continue to be a focal point of national discussion, reflecting the broader concerns about ethics, governance, and accountability in the country.
