The Chairman of the special seven-member committee investigating the leaked tape involving senior police officers and the former Northern Region Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Daniel Bugri Naabu, has issued a stern warning to COP George Alex Mensah, the Director of Operations of the Ghana Police Service.
The warning came after COP Mensah criticized the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, during his appearance before the committee.
COP Mensah had described the IGP as the worst in the history of the police service and accused him of mismanagement. These comments raised concerns that the committee’s proceedings could turn into a trial of the entire police service.
Chair of the committee, Hon. Samuel Atta Akyea, cautioned COP Mensah about the potential consequences of his remarks, emphasizing that the focus should remain on the specific issues related to the leaked tape. He noted that there should be no distraction from the committee’s primary task of investigating the authenticity and content of the tape.
During his appearance before the committee, COP Mensah clarified that while he had professional disagreements with the IGP, there was no personal animosity between them. He also stated that he is known for speaking his mind openly.
The leaked tape had suggested that there were discussions within the police service to remove the IGP before the 2024 elections. Although Chief Bugri Naabu confirmed the tape’s content, COP Mensah denied its accuracy, claiming that some portions had been edited.
As the committee continues its investigation, the focus remains on uncovering the facts surrounding the leaked tape and any related issues, without becoming a platform for broader criticisms or disputes within the police service.
