Kennedy Ohene Agyapong’s campaign team has offered clarity regarding his recent statement, asserting that his comment about a “showdown” with President Nana Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was not intended as a threat.
The clarification comes in response to concerns raised over Agyapong’s remarks captured in a viral video during the New Patriotic Party’s special delegates conference.
Agyapong, a flagbearer hopeful in the NPP, made the comment after learning of alleged attacks on his agents in the North East Region. While his words had raised eyebrows and led to the promise of disciplinary action from the NPP, his campaign manager, Kwame Owusu, explained that the term “showdown” was used to convey Agyapong’s
determination to emerge victorious in the upcoming November 4 polls, regardless of perceived intimidation.
Owusu addressed the meaning behind the term, stating, “Whether or not the confrontation was directed towards the Vice President or not, are you concerned about the meaning of confrontation?
Because I think the showdown is basically a decisive point of either a confrontation or a contest. In that regard, if it is addressed to the Vice president it only then meant that come November no matter what happens he is going to be a victor.”
He further clarified that Agyapong’s use of the term was not intended as a threat, but rather as a straightforward expression that might have been articulated in a distinct manner. Owusu emphasized that the language used was not a cause for concern.
In addition, Owusu affirmed Agyapong’s willingness to cooperate with the party’s disciplinary process. This assurance underscores Agyapong’s commitment to resolving any misunderstandings that might have arisen from his comments.
As the NPP navigates this situation, the clarification from Agyapong’s campaign team sheds light on the intention behind his words and aims to alleviate any concerns surrounding his statement.
