Nana Akomea, the Director of Campaign Communications for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has stated that if the Vice President is selected as the flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), it could help the party move away from the ‘Akan Party’ label that has been attached to it by the opposition.
He explained that the NPP has been branded as an ‘Akan Party’, limiting its appeal to other ethnic groups in the country.
In an interview, Nana Akomea emphasized that Dr. Bawumia’s selection as the flagbearer could neutralize this branding and propaganda by opposition parties.
He argued that having Dr. Bawumia, who hails from the northern region, as the flagbearer could attract votes from areas that might have voted against the NPP due to the ‘Akan Party’ perception.
Nana Akomea also highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s capabilities and achievements, including his involvement in the election hearings of 2012 and his contributions to policy implementation during his time as Vice President.
He asserted that Dr. Bawumia’s track record makes him a strong candidate to lead the NPP and the country.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is among the 10 aspirants in the NPP’s presidential primaries. The special delegate conference, scheduled for Saturday, August 26, aims to reduce the number of aspirants to five before the national conference in November.
The choice of flagbearer holds significant implications for the NPP’s image and appeal as the party prepares for the 2024 general elections.
