Ernest Owusu-Bempah, a Deputy Director of Communication of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called on the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to provide a more detailed and comprehensible explanation of both the issues concerning its new headquarters construction and the GH₵60.8 billion loss it incurred last year.
Owusu-Bempah believes that these matters are causing significant concerns for the government and its communicators and thus requires a clearer and more transparent explanation from the central bank.
The Minority in Parliament has been demanding answers from the Bank of Ghana, seeking information about various aspects of the new headquarters project, including the procurement of land and the names of consultants and project managers involved.
Owusu-Bempah emphasized that addressing these concerns transparently is essential, as the current situation is causing difficulties for the government and the NPP.
Owusu-Bempah stated, “The Governor of the Bank of Ghana needs to sit up and come clean so that the government will look good. This issue is becoming a danger for the political fortune in the 2024 elections.”
He also highlighted the importance of a clear explanation, particularly regarding the allegations of missing money and the construction of a $250 million headquarters.
He stressed that the Bank of Ghana is a significant financial institution in the country and its activities impact the entire economy, so it is crucial for its actions to be well-understood by the public.
The Minority in Parliament, mainly composed of members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed its dissatisfaction with the Bank of Ghana’s handling of its finances and the GH₵60.8 billion loss incurred in 2022.
They have scheduled a protest at the Bank of Ghana’s head office to demand the resignation of its Governor and Deputy Governors due to their perceived mishandling of financial matters.
