President Akufo-Addo has lauded Ghana’s performance in the 2022 West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE), presenting it as a testament to the success of his government’s educational initiatives.
Speaking at the Queen Girls Senior High’s speech and prize day event in the Western North region, the President emphasized that the 2022 WASSCE results stand as the country’s best in the past eight years.
President Akufo-Addo’s sentiments underscore the notion that this achievement lends substantial credence to the effectiveness of the Free Senior High School (SHS) program and the accompanying measures put in place.
He expressed confidence that the remarkable outcomes of the 2022 WASSCE would help quell any remaining doubts about the merit and impact of the Free SHS policy.
The President’s remarks echo his sentiments from December 2022, during which he voiced his pride in the accomplishments of the 2022 WASSCE cohort.
He highlighted specific improvements in subject performance, underscoring the progress made under his administration. For instance, he noted that the percentage of students achieving grades A1-C6 in English had risen from 51.6% in 2016 to 60.39% in 2022.
Likewise, achievements in subjects such as Integrated Science, Mathematics, and Social Studies demonstrated positive trends in student performance.
President Akufo-Addo also harkened back to the pioneers of the double track system, who achieved commendable results in the 2021 batch of students.
This is noteworthy because the double track system had faced criticism and skepticism upon its introduction. The President, however, seized the opportunity to highlight the program’s success and the positive outcomes it has yielded.
Overall, President Akufo-Addo’s endorsement of Ghana’s 2022 WASSCE performance showcases his administration’s commitment to improving the educational sector.
By linking the positive results to the Free SHS policy and other related measures, he aims to solidify the program’s credibility and impact on the country’s educational landscape.
