During a church service held on Sunday, August 20, the outgoing Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Prof. Obiri Yeboah Mante, commended Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his role in promoting religious unity, affectionately referring to him as a “Muslim-Christian.”
Addressing the closing session of the 23rd General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana at the Ramseyer Congregation in Abetifi Kwahu,
Rev. Prof. Mante expressed the nation’s gratitude for the presence of Vice President Bawumia. He highlighted Bawumia’s exceptional ability to embrace religious diversity and his comfort in participating in Christian worship despite his Muslim faith.
Rev. Prof. Mante shared an anecdote from a past event where he stood alongside Vice President Bawumia. To his surprise, Bawumia sang all the lines of a hymn being performed.
Upon inquiry, Bawumia revealed that he had been a member of the Methodist Boys’ Brigade during his youth.
This led Rev. Prof. Mante to humorously suggest that Bawumia could be more than just a Muslim, playfully terming him a “Muslim Christian.”
The closing session of the 23rd General Assembly witnessed the presence of distinguished figures from academia, politics, chieftaincy, and the
clergy of the Presbyterian Church from across the continent. Additionally, Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye was elected as the upcoming Moderator of the Church during this year’s Assembly.
