Dormaahene Urges President to Halt Bank of Ghana’s New Headquarters Project -

Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, the Dormaahene, has called upon President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to intervene and prevent the Bank of Ghana (BoG) from proceeding with its plans to construct a new headquarters building. The $250 million project has faced strong opposition from the Minority in Parliament, who have announced their intention to picket at the Central Bank's premises in protest. Expressing his concerns, the Dormaahene remarked that the decision to build a new headquarters seems ill-timed given the current economic conditions in Ghana. He made this statement during a meeting at his palace in Dormaa in the Bono Region, where a delegation paid him a courtesy call. He emphasized the need for the President to step in, meet with the BoG, and reconsider the decision, while keeping the country's financial situation in mind. Simultaneously, the Minority caucus in Parliament has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Bank of Ghana to provide information about the cost of the new headquarters construction in line with Section 18 of the Right to Information Act. The request was sent by the Member of Parliament for the Bawku Central Constituency, Mahama Ayariga, on behalf of the Chief Whip of the Minority caucus, Kwame Governs Agbodza. The letter seeks details about the land procurement process for the new headquarters building and the names of consultants and project managers involved. The Minority's push for transparency reflects their concerns about the significant financial outlay amid ongoing economic challenges. The Dormaahene's call and the Minority's demand for information highlight the public's interest in transparency, accountability, and prudent use of resources in major projects undertaken by public institutions.
