NDC Youth Wing Protests Against 10% Betting Tax

The Youth Wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has boldly declared its intention to take a stand against the government’s recent imposition of a 10 percent tax on betting wins. The tax policy was introduced on August 15, prompting the NDC youth to rise up and voice their dissent.

In a statement released on August 16, the NDC’s youth wing outlined their plans to halt the government’s decision through a series of actions that encompass agitation, protests, advocacy, and civic engagements. Their collective aim is to ensure that the government reverses the imposition of the tax, which they view as an unjust burden on the youth of Ghana.

According to the statement, the NDC youth see the tax as a means for the government to shift the financial responsibility onto young Ghanaians. They view it as an attempt to compensate for various issues plaguing the nation, including alleged corruption, the state of the economy, and failed government policies.

The statement points to concerns about funds allegedly stolen and hidden by government officials, the alleged corruption at the Bank of Ghana, and what they perceive as unfulfilled promises from President Akufo-Addo’s administration. They also criticize the perceived arrogance of government appointees and the impact of corruption on the economy, all of which they believe have left the youth financially disadvantaged.

The NDC youth’s plans include picketing the Ministry of Finance and occupying government offices across the country. The statement, signed by National Youth Organiser George Opare Addo, further indicates their intention to engage in both conventional and unconventional lawful protests as part of their resistance. Additionally, they plan to encourage young people to confront government officials and demand an end to perceived corruption and insensitivity.

Parliament and other government agencies have not been exempted from their notice, as the NDC youth vow to occupy these spaces as well. The statement concludes by urging all young people to mobilize and join the cause, with further communication to be shared with NDC youth in constituencies across the nation for coordinated actions.

This resolute stance taken by the NDC’s youth wing exemplifies their commitment to standing up for what they believe is fair and just, as they strive to make their voices heard and effect change in their nation.
