Ghana’s Parliament has taken action to investigate the National Cathedral project following corruption allegations raised by North Tongu lawmaker Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and five other minority members. The private member’s motion demanded a thorough examination of the project, which has faced controversy and escalating costs.
Second Deputy Speaker Andrew Amoako Asiamah approved the motion, highlighting the significance of the investigation. The National Cathedral project is the most expensive in Ghana’s history, with costs rising from $100 million to $400 million, and still increasing. Despite approximately $58 million already spent on the project, it remains unfinished and has become a subject of controversy.
The establishment of a special or Adhoc committee to investigate the matter under Order 919 allows for scrutiny of the project’s expenditures, liabilities, interests, and suspension claims, which amount to around $52 million. The investigation aims to bring transparency and clarity to the National Cathedral project and address any concerns regarding mismanagement and corruption.
