
AI Godfather Quits Google, Expresses Concerns Over Misinformation and Job Market Disruption
Dr Geoffrey Hinton, renowned as the godfather of AI, has parted ways with Google due to his growing apprehensions about the risks posed by artificial intelligence. Citing concerns over the abundance of misinformation, the potential for AI to disrupt the job market, and the “existential risk” arising from true digital intelligence, Hinton decided to leave the tech giant to voice his worries openly.
Dr Hinton, aged 75, played a significant role in developing Google’s AI technology over the past decade. His pioneering approach paved the way for modern AI systems like ChatGPT. However, he now expresses regrets about his contribution to the field and feels it’s crucial to address the dangers of AI.
One of the worrisome aspects Hinton pointed out was the rise of AI chatbots, which could surpass human intelligence and be exploited by malicious actors. He believes that such bots could generate vast amounts of text, leading to effective spambots, or even be utilized by authoritarian leaders to manipulate electorates.

In the short term, Hinton highlights the difficulty people face in distinguishing AI-generated content, including photos, videos, and text, from genuine material, causing confusion and misinformation online.
Furthermore, he fears that AI will eventually replace various jobs, from paralegals to personal assistants and beyond, posing a challenge to the job market.
