Ghana AIDS Commission, Over 100,000 Unaware Individuals Spreading HIV Unknowingly

Ghana AIDS Commission Discloses Over 100,000 Unaware HIV Carriers in the Country

The Director General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Dr Kyeremeh Atuahene, has revealed that more than 100,000 individuals in Ghana are carriers of HIV without being aware of their status, leading to inadvertent transmission.

Dr Atuahene made this revelation during an interview with JoyNews after announcing the alarming HIV figures at a news conference in Accra.

He emphasized that over 28% of people living with HIV remain undiagnosed due to the lack of testing, accounting for approximately 100,000 individuals who unknowingly spread the virus, which is a concerning situation.

Highlighting the importance of knowing one’s HIV status, Dr Atuahene explained that early diagnosis could significantly improve treatment success rates and enhance the body’s ability to regenerate and support the immune system.

The Ghana AIDS Commission has launched an aggressive search to locate and provide treatment for the over 100,000 persons with HIV. To reach underserved populations and those who fear testing in traditional settings, the Commission has initiated an HIV self-test campaign, bringing essential services to their doorstep.
