On Monday morning, Assembly member for Benso Electoral Area Justin Afful verified this to Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson, host of an FM Omanbapa morning program.

According to him, the deceased, Agye Nyame Sulemana, A.K.A Sulley, was returning with his group from their usual’operation’ when he was shot alongside other cartel members.

The Assemblyman says that the gang moves from one galamsey site to the next armed with pistols, knives, cudgels, and other weapons, robbing illegal miners of their gold and money.

“He has a gang, and they have terrorized residents in my electoral district.” They primarily obstruct traffic and rob unsuspecting people of their valuables. They are accompanied by firearms, knives, and other ammo. They came for one of these operations last Thursday evening and were on their way back with their loot when a bullet from an unknown place struck some of the members,” the Assembly member said.
According to reports, the gang leader was rushed to the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital with severe gunshot wounds and was declared dead. Other gang members with lesser injuries were also taken to the hospital.

The Assembly member went on to say that a tip to the Ghana Police led to the arrest of two other gang members who were also getting treatment at the facility.

They are presently in the Tarkwa Police Command’s custody.

The group, according to the Assembly member, primarily targets miners.

“Whenever the miners in my area are on break, these armed robbers will come around with their ammunition, threaten them and take all their gold and money. Anyone who refuses to comply would then be attacked. We still don’t know the person who shot them,” he indicated.

Agye Nyame Sulemana’s wife has since denied claims that her husband is an armed robber.
