The currency was established, according to the statement, to be used as a medium of exchange for the purchase of goods and services. Mr. Dominic Owusu, Director of the Central Bank's money Department, told reporters today (March 30, 2023), that any other use of the money was illegal and would result in prosecution. He claimed that, aside from being illegal, such activities made it easier for the notes to deteriorate or be defaced. He claimed that such acts harmed the central bank's operations because spoiled and worn-out notes are replaced at a cost. Mr. Owusu was speaking to journalists about currency security as part of events marking Ghana Month in March. He stated that the local currency was an essential symbol of the nation, and that all efforts should be made to maintain its quality and cleanliness.
